About The People of Costa Rica
Costa Rican people are extremely friendly, like to dance, fun loving and hospitality is in their blood. They are family oriented and peaceful in nature. The culture and heritage of Costa Rican people makes the country perfect for tourists. Costa Rican people are educated as well as polite even though there are exceptions. Costa Rican people are the mixture of different races and Costa Ricans are commonly known as Ticos. Tico means a male and Tica means a female. People of Costa Rica like to party loud and love to be with other’s company.
Most of the Costa Ricans would like to avoid a fight or rudeness in their behavior. The population of the country is more than 3 million. Costa Rican population consists of homogenous people as 97% of the people in Costa Rica are mestizos (mixed blood, mostly Spanish and Native American) or direct descendants of Europeans. Majority of the people are fair skinned because many of them have European blood. Only 2% of the people in the country are Afro-Caribbean natives. There are eight different communities in indigenous population and six of the native languages survived the times. The indigenous people are residing towards the south of Costa Rica and Bribris and Cabecares are the two large indigenous groups. In the year 1994, indigenous people got the right to cast their votes.
Costa Rica has the high rates of literacy and according to the government; literacy rate of the country is 93%. It is compulsory to have education up to sixth grade and there are great numbers of public schools all over the country. Several great universities are also there in the country. Most of the Costa Ricans agree that their nation is a classless society. It is true that there is no social tension in the name of class and creed. Costa Rican do not believe in ultra nationalism, political division and volatility which makes everyone to share a middle-class mentality.
Even though there is prominence for democracy and equality, there are inequities also. The distribution of wealth among the people is uneven. Cost Rica is wealthy when compared to other countries of Latin America but most of the people are poor. Several families of rural area are living in huts, shacks and automobile tires. But very few people are desperately poor and there is bare amount of beggars also. Sexual relations are liberal in Costa Rica but some thoughts of the society do not match each other. According to the Costa Rican society, the women should be chaste and loyal. Women who are in a consensual relationship will get a similar status and legal rights of wives. The law of Costa Rica does not allow any discrimination in salaries and hiring of women. About 90% of the people are Roman Catholic and other religion is Protestantism.
